Rivermen General Manager, Kevin McDonald
announced today that the club has signed forward Derek Nesbitt to a one-year American Hockey League contract for the
Nesbitt, 29, joined the Rivermen on Nov. 11, 2010
on a professional tryout contract and erupted with 42 points (17g, 25a) in 55
overall games. He was tied for the team lead in power-play goals with 10 and
notched three game-winners. He was signed by Peoria to a standard player
contract on Dec. 21, 2010.
He started last season with the Gwinnett Gladiators
of the ECHL. In 11 games, he posted 18
points (eight goals, 10 assists) and a plus-10 rating. The
Egmondville, Ontario, native was named the ECHL
Player of the Week for October 17-24 and was named the ECHL
Player of the Month for October as he finished October with 13 points (6g-7a)
in seven games with the Gladiators. His plus-10
rating also led the ECHL in October to earn the Plus
Performer of the Month honor.
In six seasons of professional
hockey, Nesbitt has appeared in 178 career AHL games between the Rockford
IceHogs, Manitoba Moose, San Antonio Rampage and Peoria. He has 101 points (44g, 57a) and 30 penalty
minutes at the AHL level. In 2009-10,
the 6’0, 185-pound winger played in 23 games with the IceHogs (4g, 1a) and 37
games with the Toledo Walleye (11g, 22a).
In 211 career ECHL games, he has scored 86 goals and added 154 assists
for 240 points between Gwinnett, Idaho and Toledo.
Prior to turning pro, Nesbitt spent four years at
Ferris State University where he accumulated 141 points (59g, 82a) in 154
