Peoria Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel announced Tuesday that forward Robert Vanwynsberghe has been signed to a three-game tryout.
Vanwynsberghe, 27, attended training camp with the Fayetteville FireAntz, but was released prior to the season opener. Instead, the 6’2, 200-pound forward signed with the Danbury Whalers (Federal Hockey League) and produced 13 points (5g, 8a) in 13 games. He made his professional debut on Nov. 2 against Watertown, and scored once.
A native of London, Ontario, Vanwynsberghe was claimed off waivers by Danville (FHL) on Dec. 21 and collected six points (4g, 2a) in 11 games with the Dashers. On Jan. 17, he was traded to the Dayton Demonz (FHL), where he notched 36 points (17g, 19a) in just 17 games.
Vanwynsberghe spent each of the past four seasons in the Western Ontario Athletic Association, a senior AA league. Last year, he totaled 16 points (12g, 4a) in 20 games for the Petrolia Squires.
The Southern Professional Hockey League allows each team a maximum of 10 three-game tryouts to be used each season. Vanwynsberghe becomes Peoria’s eighth player to be signed to a three-game tryout this year. The others include Matt Graham, Mike Lysyj, Adam Feniak, Corey Tamblyn, Paul Chiasson, Jeremiah Ketts and Locke Jillson.
The Rivermen return to action on Tuesday with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop against the Bloomington Thunder at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The game can be heard locally on CD Country 107.9 FM or online here. Fans can also follow along via the live video and audio stream at www.americaonesports.com
