Peoria Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel announced Sunday veteran enforcer Dennis Sicard has been signed for the 2014-15 season. The 29-year old is the all-time penalty minutes leader in the Southern Professional Hockey League with 1,420 PIM over seven seasons.
“Dennis will bring a lot of leadership to Peoria and will make every player play bigger,” Trudel said. “We were not happy with our physical play last year, so my number one priority was to address that.”
“We will never play soft again.”
A native of Cobourg, Ontario, Sicard spent the 2013-14 season with the Bloomington Thunder (SPHL) and amassed 12 points (8g, 4a) with 196 penalty minutes in 38 games. Three of those points (2g, 1a) came in 14 games against Peoria, while his penalty minutes overall were fifth-most in the league last season.
Since his debut in 2007, Sicard has been one of the most popular players in the SPHL for his relentless physical play. Off the ice, he is respected for his leadership in the community and his relationship with the fans. Plus, Sicard has already become a fan favorite in central Illinois after just one year with Bloomington.
Overall, the 5’11, 185-pound forward is a veteran of 276 SPHL games with 131 career fights. During that span, he also recorded 71 goals and 58 assists while with Richmond, Huntsville, Louisiana, Augusta and Bloomington. In addition, Sicard spent eight games with IHL Bloomington in 2009-10, and 32 more games in the Central Hockey League with Tulsa from 2007-2009.
