Peoria Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel announced Friday that veteran defenseman Mike MacIntyre has been signed for the 2014-15 season.
Regarded as an elite defenseman in the Southern Professional Hockey League, MacIntyre was initially acquired last February as part of a three-player trade with the Pensacola Ice Flyers. However, MacIntyre was serving a call-up with the St. Charles Chill (Central Hockey League) at the time of the deal and never made it to Peoria.
“We recruited him last summer with no luck,” Trudel said. “Then we had a chance to trade for him and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity.”
“He’s a dynamic player who can create chances and brings a lot of experience to the locker room. Plus, he’s a top defenseman in this league.”
A native of Belle River, Ontario, MacIntyre appeared in 18 games for Pensacola last season and produced seven points (4g, 3a), 30 penalty minutes and a plus-8 rating. In addition, the 23-year old spent seven games with the Brampton Beast (CHL), and concluded the year in St. Charles, where he notched 12 points (2g, 10a) and 57 penalty minutes in 38 games.
Two seasons ago, the 5’11, 200-pound blue-liner was a key part of Pensacola’s SPHL championship team. In 42 regular-season games, MacIntyre recorded 17 points (8g, 9a) and 60 penalty minutes. He also appeared in all seven post-season contests.
Prior to turning pro, MacIntyre played two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2009-2011. Overall, he spent 67 games between the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Windsor Spitfires.
