Rivermen Extend Win Streak to Four Games

Charles Linglet, Julian Talbot, and Martin Kariya chipped in on all four Peoria goals as the Rivermen beat the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-1 at Carver Arena on Thursday night to extend the team’s winning streak to four games.

Grand Rapids opened the scoring in the game, as Carl Corazzini’s first period power play goal found the net through traffic in front of Marek Schwarz.  His wrist shot that beat the goaltender glove side at 18:39, with Jonathan Ericsson’s keep at the left point setting up the score.

Peoria returned fire in the second period starting with a power play goal of its own at 9:54.  University of Maine product Martin Kariya beat fellow Maine alum Jimmy Howard by tipping a puck out of the air past the netminder and tying the game at one.

Steve Wagner then notched the game-winning goal from Julian Talbot at 10:27 when he ripped a slap shot past Howard on the stick side for a 2-1 Rivermen edge after 40 minutes of play.

Talbot would get into the goal column for the game when he converted a feed from Kariya and Linglet at 3:57 to open up a two-goal advantage, squeezing the puck between the glove and left pad of Howard from the low slot.

Kariya’s second of the night wrapped up the scoring after he and Linglet combined to pretzel up the defense on a two-on-two situation that spring Kariya down low at 18:23 for the game’s final goal.  He waited Howard down to the ice as he cut across the goal crease, faking the netminder down early and scoring his 12th marker of the year to put the game on ice.

Schwarz played very well for Peoria, stopping 28 shots to pick up his 9th win of the year, while Howard stopped 34 shots in the loss, many in spectacular fashion.

The Rivermen will now get back to action against the Rockford IceHogs tomorrow night at 7 pm, with the pre-game show kicking off on ESPN RADIO with Tom Callahan one-half hour before game time.  It’s Coca-Cola 2-for-$22 Friday night, plus PAR-A-DICE Hotel Casino Playful Vegas Escape Night and Weddings on Ice Night as well.
