In his second game of the season, Chris Porter scored his second goal of the year and added an assist, as the Peoria Rivermen scored twice on the power play and beat the Houston Aeros 6-2 Sunday evening. The Rivermen scored five unanswered goals after facing a 2-1 deficit after the first period.
Houston took the early lead when Stephane Veilleux scored a shorthanded goal. Steven Kampfer stole the puck, and passed it up to Veilleux, who led a two-on-one breakaway. Veilleux passed the puck to David McIntyre, who had his shot saved by Jake Allen, but Veilleux knocked in the rebound at 8:06 in the first period.
Peoria answered later in the period after Derek Nesbitt used a backhanded pass to get the puck to Adam Cracknell. Cracknell's wrist shot flew past Matt Hackett's stick side into the back of the net for his 11th goal of the season.
However, the Aeros scored another shorthanded goal 1:15 later, when Jake Dowell stole the puck and skated on a breakaway before shooting the puck past Allen to give Houston a 2-1 lead at 15:52 in the first period.
The Rivermen power-play unit responded in the second period with two goals. First, Porter scored on a wrist shot from the right hashmarks. Cade Fairchild and Andrew Murray assisted on the goal at 5:05 into the frame. Later, Derek Nesbitt scored his 14th goal of the year on another assist from Fairchild, which ultimately was the game-winning goal. T.J. Hensick also earned an assist on the play.
Peoria extended its lead in the third period. Hensick slapped in a rebound to the top of the net past Hackett at 9:39 in the third frame. Phil McRae and Porter were credited with assists. Later into the period, Brett Sonne stole the puck at center ice. Sonne raced down the ice on a breakaway, was pushed from behind onto his back, and still was able to push a shot past Hackett for his second goal of the year.
Scott Ford added an empty net goal at 18:55 in the third period. Tyler Shattock earned an assist on the play.
Peoria went 2-for-4 on the power play as Houston was unsuccessful on all five of their attempts. The Aeros outshot the Rivermen 26-25 in the game.
